We face two major problems in this century: Climate Change & Biodiversity Loss
Climate warming effects: e.g. disasters when going above 1-5 to 2 degrees
Biodiversity Loss:
>1M species at risk of extinction
24% of European species extinct since 1970
Climate Change (& in its extension biodiversity loss) overproportionally caused by big, partially government owned companies: 71% of emissions caused by 100 companies
Individual responsibility (e.g. carbon footprint):
a) Doesn't scale
b) was invented by BP in 2004 to move responsibility from big fossil fuel corporations like them towards the individuals
Capitalism is unlikely to disappear --> profits motivate actions
We have to achieve an equilibrium between economic activity & planetary boundaries if we want to survive on this planet for multiple generations
